Insurance groups 11 to 15 explained

Low to middling groups on the UK's 1 to 50 scale, where 1 is the cheapest to insure. They hold family hatchbacks and small crossovers, and each group is explained below.

What each group from 11 to 15 means

The number is the group, and the letter after it records how the car's security affected the rating. E means it beat the requirement and dropped one group. D means it fell short and went up one. A means it met the requirement, and P marks a group that is still provisional.

  1. Insurance group 11

Group 11 sits about 20% of the way up the scale, with 10 groups cheaper and 39 dearer. An 11E car scored as group 12 and was cut to 11 for above-standard security. An 11D car scored as group 10 and was raised to 11 because its security falls short. An 11A car's security met the requirement, so its group was not adjusted, and 11P means the group is provisional, set before full rating data was available at launch.

  2. Insurance group 12

Group 12 sits about 22% of the way up the scale, with 11 groups cheaper and 38 dearer. A 12E car scored as group 13 and was cut to 12 for above-standard security. A 12D car scored as group 11 and was raised to 12 because its security falls short. A 12A car's security met the requirement, so its group was not adjusted, and 12P means the group is provisional, set before full rating data was available at launch.

  3. Insurance group 13

Group 13 sits about 24% of the way up the scale, with 12 groups cheaper and 37 dearer. A 13E car scored as group 14 and was cut to 13 for above-standard security. A 13D car scored as group 12 and was raised to 13 because its security falls short. A 13A car's security met the requirement, so its group was not adjusted, and 13P means the group is provisional, set before full rating data was available at launch.

  4. Insurance group 14

Group 14 sits about 27% of the way up the scale, with 13 groups cheaper and 36 dearer. A 14E car scored as group 15 and was cut to 14 for above-standard security. A 14D car scored as group 13 and was raised to 14 because its security falls short. A 14A car's security met the requirement, so its group was not adjusted, and 14P means the group is provisional, set before full rating data was available at launch.

  5. Insurance group 15

Group 15 sits about 29% of the way up the scale, with 14 groups cheaper and 35 dearer. A 15E car scored as group 16 and was cut to 15 for above-standard security. A 15D car scored as group 14 and was raised to 15 because its security falls short. A 15A car's security met the requirement, so its group was not adjusted, and 15P means the group is provisional, set before full rating data was available at launch.

Groups are set by the Group Rating Panel of insurers, with Thatcham Research assessing each car, and the rating is advisory, so insurers can depart from it. In Thatcham's own example, a group 9 car with better-than-required security is listed as 8E, and one whose security falls short is listed as 10D. The full scale lists every letter, and our guide to how insurance groups work covers the system end to end.

Cars rated in groups 11 to 15

Which cars are in insurance groups 11 to 15?

  • Ford Focus
  • Volkswagen Golf
  • Vauxhall Astra
  • Skoda Octavia
  • Nissan Juke
  • Dacia Duster

Groups 11 to 15 cover mid-range family cars. They have more power and kit than a supermini, but are common enough that repairs stay affordable. Each engine, trim and security combination is rated on its own, so one model can span many groups.

For a new driver

Are groups 11 to 15 good for a new driver?

Groups 11 to 15 can work for a new driver, but they are not the cheapest start. Groups 1 to 10 cost less to insure.

Our reading of the scale, not an insurer's rule. MoneySuperMarket's band medians cover drivers of every age, and new drivers usually pay well above them.

Finding a car's group

How can I find a specific car's insurance group?

Many insurance quotes state the group, and most manufacturers' UK price lists show it for new cars. Comparison sites and motoring publishers list groups by model and trim, and some look them up by registration using licensed industry data. It is not on the V5C logbook or the DVLA record, so our report does not show it.

Insurance groups 11 to 15: common questions

Are insurance groups 11 to 15 high or low?

Groups 11 to 15 are low to middling on the 1 to 50 scale, where 1 is the cheapest to insure. They broadly cover family hatchbacks and small crossovers.

How much is insurance for groups 11 to 15 per month?

About £40 a month for groups 11 to 15, based on the £485 median annual price of policies sold for groups 11 to 20 through MoneySuperMarket in July 2026. MoneySuperMarket publishes ten-group bands, so there is no separate figure for each group, and your age, postcode and claims record move the price far more than the group does.

Which cars are in insurance groups 11 to 15?

Versions of the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra, Skoda Octavia, Nissan Juke and Dacia Duster are typical of groups 11 to 15. Each engine, trim and security combination is rated on its own, so one model can span several groups.

Is the 1 to 50 insurance group system being replaced?

Yes, for brand-new models. Thatcham Research's Vehicle Risk Rating, launched in September 2024, scores new model ranges from 1 to 99 in five areas, while cars already rated keep their 1 to 50 insurance group.
