How does the free MOT reminder work?

Leave a registration and an email address, confirm the address, and we email you before the car's MOT is due.

1. Leave your reg

We look up the current MOT due date on the car's DVSA MOT record, so the reminder is tied to the real expiry, not a guess.

2. Confirm it's you

One quick click on the email we send, and you're on the list. That confirmation keeps typos and other people's addresses off it, and if you don't click, nothing is ever sent.

3. We nudge you in time

A heads-up about a month out, then a couple of shorter reminders near the date, so booking the test never sneaks up on you.

What happens if your MOT runs out?

Once a car's MOT runs out you can't drive or park it on the road. The only journeys allowed are to a pre-arranged MOT test, or to or from somewhere to be repaired, and driving without a valid MOT can bring a fine of up to £1,000.

Most people don't forget on purpose; the date just quietly passes while life gets in the way. A reminder in the right week fixes that for nothing.

It's also the moment to catch problems early. If you leave the test to the last day and it fails, you're off the road until it's fixed. MOT reminders: common questions

Is the MOT reminder really free?

Completely. Leave a reg and an email and we'll nudge you before the MOT is due. There's no charge and no account needed. We make our money on the £5.00 report, which is a separate thing you only buy if you want it.

Do you get MOT reminders automatically?

Not in England, Scotland or Wales, where you have to sign up. DVSA's free service on GOV.UK sends a text or email a month before a car's MOT is due, and our free reminder emails you as well. DVLA sends vehicle tax reminders, not MOT ones. In Northern Ireland, a reminder comes by post 7 weeks before the test.

Is there a grace period after an MOT runs out?

No, there is no grace period for an expired MOT. The only journeys allowed are to a pre-arranged MOT test, or to or from somewhere to be repaired, and driving without a valid MOT can bring a fine of up to £1,000. You can take the test up to a month (minus a day) early and keep the same renewal date.

When will you email me?

Once you've confirmed, we send a heads-up about a month out, then a couple of shorter reminders as the date gets close, and a final one if it reaches the due day. That's it; we don't email you for anything else.

My car is nearly new, so why won't it let me set a reminder?

Cars don't need their first MOT until they're three years old, so there's no due date to remind you about yet. Come back once the first test is booked and we'll have a date to work with.

How do I stop the reminders?

Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and it takes effect straight away. You can re-subscribe any time by setting the reminder up again.
