The check that actually matters: VIN versus V5C

Decoding a VIN is interesting. Matching it is what keeps you out of trouble. A car wears its VIN in several places: the windscreen plate, the door pillar sticker, the stamp in the metal, plus section 4 of the V5C and the MOT certificate. On a straight car, every one of them agrees.

A cloned or ringed car is where they don't. Stolen cars get dressed in the identity of a legal one, and the disguise usually runs one layer deep: the plates and paperwork say one thing, and a VIN somewhere on the car quietly says another. What a VIN can't tell you

Plenty of sites dress a VIN form up as a "free car check". Here's the honest version. The number itself carries no colour, no trim, no MOT history, no mileage, no finance position and no owner details. Those live in vehicle databases, and the databases are searched by registration.

So use the VIN for what it's genuinely good at, which is identity.
