When did the Edinburgh LEZ start?

The City of Edinburgh Council introduced the LEZ on 31 May 2022 and started issuing penalty charge notices on 1 June 2024. The two years in between were a grace period with no fines.

Can I drive round the edge of the Edinburgh LEZ?

Yes, in any car, because the boundary roads are not part of the zone. The council changed the junctions at the Pleasance and Holyrood Road and at Tollcross, and made changes on Morrison Street, so that drivers of non-compliant vehicles can avoid entering.

How big is the Edinburgh LEZ?

The zone covers 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) of the city centre, less than 3% of Edinburgh's 46 square mile urban area. The council publishes an interactive map and a PDF of the boundary.

Does Edinburgh send texts about unpaid LEZ fines?

No. The council warns that fake text messages asking people to pay an overdue LEZ penalty are going round, and says it never sends messages about unpaid penalty charge notices. Delete them without clicking the link.
