When did the Sheffield Clean Air Zone start?

Sheffield's Clean Air Zone launched on Monday 27 February 2023. Full charging began on 5 June 2023, because the council first exempted local vans and Hackney Carriage taxis.

Is the Sheffield ring road in the Clean Air Zone?

Yes, the inner ring road is part of the zone, not just the city centre inside it. A non-compliant van, taxi, bus or lorry pays the daily charge to drive on it.

Is there a discount for motorhomes in Sheffield?

Yes. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes pay £10 a day instead of £50 once registered with the council, but only through its permits portal and no later than 11:59pm on the day of travel.

Can school coaches get an exemption in Sheffield?

Yes. Buses, coaches and minibuses contracted for curriculum trips for pupils under 19 can get a free exemption for each day, applied for at least 3 working days ahead.

Will Sheffield council tell me if my vehicle entered the zone?

Has the Sheffield Clean Air Zone worked?

The council reported that nitrogen dioxide fell at every monitored location in the zone in 2023, by 16% overall since launch. Its taxi fleet went from 64% compliant in November 2022 to 95% in May 2024, and 1,595 grants had been paid by then.
